2015 Goals and a Plan to Succeed

Hello, out there.

Yes, it has been a long time.  Yes, I've been busy but honestly, not that busy!  I have not posted frequently here because . . . quite honestly . . . it's hard to keep up a weight loss blog when there is almost never any weight loss to report.  There, I said it!

I have my list of "reasons" too -- some real, most excuses -- but that isn't the point, is it?  The point is, I have a commitment to myself to reduce my weight, and by golly, I am going to.

The good news is, I haven't given up. I have managed not only to maintain, but to lose another 12 pounds since school started. I have lessened my effort at times since Thanksgiving but am still on a losing trend.

I have made a big commitment for this year: To lose 50 pounds. For me, that's a lot, as a typical loss ratio for me is about 1/2 pound every two weeks. What I have learned since September, however, is that increased muscle tone and activity can give me the metabolism boost I need to sustain a higher rate of loss.

Frankly, it's going to take a higher rate of loss for me to ever get there since -- and I know some of you can relate to this -- every time I get sick or for some reason lose my focus, I immediately gain 2 pounds.  That's four weeks of work at my normal rate of loss! I can't afford to lose at such a low rate when gaining is as easy as breathing for me!  Okay, that's a little dramatic, but you get the picture.

Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows -- no one ever lost a pound by "planning" to lose. It takes real and concrete action.  Here is my action plan to get those 50 pounds off:

  • Re-vamp my daily schedule with planned exercise periods (done);
  • Get back to tracking my food to give me the opportunity for course correction;
  • Stay within my Weight Watcher's Points Plus allowance;
  • Have perfect attendance at Weight Watcher's this year;
  • Notice the life-shocks that precipitate poor eating choices and deal with them;
  • Get 60K steps a week, plus a minimum of one hour of strength training and work up to at total of 30 min/day (6 days a week) of structured exercise;
  • Get a strong support partner on board and keep working with my WW partner.

I think this will be the recipe for success for me. The trick -- as always -- is sticking with it and believing in myself. My last list-item will help with this.

The elephant in the room in all this is this: My last post on this blog was in June; over 6 months ago. At that time I was in a self-made PRT Challenge.  Needless to say, I did not complete the challenge or reach my goals. I allowed myself to get distracted, especially when it got hard.

All I can do from here is forgive myself, learn from my mistakes and move on. That's what it's all about right?  I know I have re-started a thousand times, but what is the alternative? If I'm not forgiving myself and trying again, then I'm giving up -- and that is not an option.  I am quite certain if I hadn't been fighting all these years, I'd weigh 300+ pounds now. I gain weight so easily.

There is some science to help me:  Research shows most people give up their weight loss efforts within a few weeks. Other studies show that people who participate in a weight loss or accountability group are twice as likely to succeed at weight loss.  Additionally, losses of more than 44 pounds are more likely to be maintained than losses of 24 pounds or less. I am planning to get all of these things working for me this year.

What about you? Where are you in your weight loss efforts? What is your New Year's plan?

Slow Start Continues and It's Friday!

Slow Start to the Gym Continues

My slow start to the gym seems to be working.  I have only had normal post-workout soreness and no injuries; I have not experienced that debilitating soreness that goes on for days.  Perhaps more importantly, because I've set my expectations of myself uncharacteristically low, I am meeting (and exceeding) my expectations!  Here is how my program has progressed so far:
  • Week One- get up, get to the gym, and do something for 30 minutes or more, 5 days a week (no calorie or heart rate monitoring; no "programs").
  • Week Two - do a little more; push myself a bit on the cardio (still no monitoring or tracking)
  • Week Three - begin a program of 3 cardio and 2 strength training sessions per week
  • Last week:  Begin Couch to 5K (C25K) program; pay attention to weight and reps; begin gradual increase in weight or reps (not both).
  • Begin tracking calories burned (that is this week); also because of C25K, I am noting distance.
  • Next week:  Increase cardio to 35 minutes or more
  • The next step, which will probably be in 2 weeks, will be to start monitoring my heart rate.
I feel great and my motivation is high.  That's priceless to me!

Friday Tips, Tricks and Inspiration
This week's theme is making changes to reach your goals in this new year -- or to take another shot at the resolutions you've already forgotten about!

My tip for you this week is to put support in place for yourself.  I currently have 4 kinds of formal support:
  1. I attend weekly Weight Watcher's meetings (for the weigh-in and the community atmosphere);
  2. I have my text friend with whom I exchange "get up and get to the gym" text messages every weekday;
  3. I have my weekly call with my long-time support partner (although it isn't necessarily about weight loss);
  4. I exchange a weekly email with a friend on a similar eating plan
  5. Informal support systems:  My family is very supportive.  They don't offer temptations to me and my hubby makes sure I get to attend my meeting.  They all are so encouraging of my efforts.  I also have tracking and sharing websites (both for weight loss and fitness) that I frequent and a bunch of blogs I follow.  All these little things add up to a lot of inspiration and motivation.
Yes, this is a lot of support.  And it turns out with 5 kids, that's how much support it takes to for me to keep me near the top of the priority list.
The trick is to keep some (or most) of your goals attainable and short term.  My next fitness goal is to walk/run a 5K in about about two weeks.  I have another scheduled a month later.  After that, we'll see!  My short term weight loss goal is to be "in the box" every day for 3 weeks.  Once I attain that, I will set a new goal.

This week I offer a tongue-in-cheek look at the gym for your inspiration.  My friend Colleen shared it with me and it is too good to keep to myself.  It is both funny and true -  let me know which ones make you smile!

Fit Friday: Tips, Tricks and Inspiration

I have a new weight loss buddy and I was explaining some things to her the other day.  It occurred to me that I know a lot about weight loss.  Yet, sometimes I don't use what I know.  So the trick of the week is:  Do what you know how to do.  If you are brand new to weight loss or way too experienced, there are things you know.  Do those things this week.  As for me, I am going to drink my water.  I know it matters, so I am going to do it.  I am down half a pound this week but noticed my ankles were really swollen.  Guess who hadn't been drinking her water?

The tip of the week is for all of we sugar addicts.  Here is an article that shows step-by-step how to break the sugar habit.

Now for the inspiration.  This is probably the most inspiring video I've seen about weight loss.  I have posted it before but after a lack of self control yesterday, I decided it was time for a re-run.  Turn off the TV, send the kids outside and take the 4 minutes.  It's worth it!!

Project Status

You can't finish something you never started.

Isn't that the truth?  Wanting to find a new job won't do it.  Thinking about saving money won't save it.  Getting frustrated about the messy closet doesn't clean it.  Wishing I were thinner doesn't take the weight off.

Sometimes, it helps to be reminded.  If I am going to enjoy living at goal weight, I've got to get there first.  And that means every day, I have to move my weight loss up to "project status."  You know what I mean by that, right?  That means setting aside time to plan, to shop for fresh produce, to cook healthy meals, to exercise; it means remembering that my weight loss project has intrinsic value and is worth investing time in.

I have a new weight loss buddy, which has made it easier to move this project up my priority list.   I am setting mini-goals for myself, like tracking all my food every day.  I will not eat a candy bar if I have to write it down; I'm just not that gal!  I am helping my buddy, which makes me more thoughtful about my own plan, as well.

Perhaps most importantly, I've gotten started.  I'm leaving behind the chaos of the last year and looking forward.  While I'm pleased that I've managed to maintain my previous loss for a year, now it is time to finish this project.  Stay tuned!
